My name is Gary Herrick and I am the owner of Computer Professor. I am the primary instructor and creator of "Computer Professor". From time to time there will be a guest instructor, if they share the philosophy of the school. This school is here because I feel very strongly there is a need. I have spent a long time listening to the needs and the complaints of people trying to use the computer. I have watched the frustrations and aggravations as they put in long hours accomplishing a task that is supposed to be easier on a computer. Sure, there are computer classes and training available, but many people do not feel comfortable going back to school. I do not blame them; many computer classes can be threatening or intimidating. Helpful co-workers and even your own family can make things worse. Read the table below and see if you recognize any common complaints in the left hand column, then read the promise in the right hand column I am making to you about that complaint.

Promise |
1. You attend a class that has been advertised as basic or beginner and they talk in terms you don’t understand or even want to know. |
I promise to make all explanations in as friendly of terms to understand as possible. New information is explained in everyday concepts you are already familiar with. |
2. The beginner course has so many people in it the instructor cannot give you any personal attention. |
Our spacious classroom has ten computers and there will never be more than ten students. |
3. The instructor starts by showing the book they have to get through and says to the class, “keep up as best you can” |
I teach “flex” classes. A term I use to describe a flexible outline of information for a class. I can slow down and focus on areas of need, include more information if needed and do a little of both if some students are faster than others. |
4. Have you started a class and gotten so lost early on, that you feel your time and money was wasted on the class? |
I will not let you get totally lost. I constantly wander the classroom as I teach. There are exercises and check points. I will include additional examples for anything not clear. |
5. Have you ever attended a class and it was five days before the instructor let you touch the computer? |
In all classes, everyday you are “hands on” with the computer. In ninety eight percent of my classes, you will be on the computer within 15 minutes. |
6. Does the instructor give you a way to contact them after you leave the class for assistance? |
All my students have my phone number and email address and are encouraged to email me with questions, all of which I will answer usually the same day. |
If
you do not feel that you are not a beginner? Are you trying to learn on
your own? Have these ever happened to you? |
1. Has your “boss” ever told you there are no funds for training, or can not spare the time to send you to training, when you know you are spending hours on reports or documents that should take minutes? |
You have no time to save time. This is a common problem where you are so busy doing things the hard way that you have no time to learn how to do them quicker, easier and often better. |
2. Have you ever attended training where you sat in an audience, received training in four applications in the same day, or never had your concerns addressed? |
It is not training if you are not in front of and using a computer. It is not training if you have one day for four or even one application. It is not good training if your concerns are never addressed. I have a variety of training formats.
In addition we are an authorized testing center for Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) certifications. |
3. Is training so far away that you loose a day’s work and the cost is high? |
Unless otherwise requested, all classes are three hours in length over several days – better retention, only one half a day is spent in class, and we are local (to the St Augustine area). Many people say I am pricing my classes too low but one of my promises is to make this training affordable as possible to as many as possible. |
